When you have a dazzling smile and your teeth are perfectly aligned, you can face the world with confidence and self-esteem. This is why dental care is a priority for many. However, the reality is that not everyone is born with perfectly aligned teeth. Unfortunately, getting braces is something that seems so daunting to many.
If you look around you, you will notice a lot of people with braces on – slowly working their way towards better teeth. But nobody really knows what it feels like to have braces until they get to try it out themselves. The common misconception is that it’s a painful process, and there are many things you need to sacrifice. But the experience of having braces is a case-to-case basis, and could be different for every single person.
When are Braces Necessary?
The first step is understanding exactly when to get braces. People can’t just jump into the braces bandwagon and get braces for the sake of doing so. You need to know when braces become absolutely necessary, and you have to understand that this is a decision that should be aligned with your dentist.
This is When Braces are Needed:
- When your upper and lower jaws or teeth are misaligned
Having misaligned jaws could lead to a point when chewing becomes extremely difficult. You can no longer chew properly or efficiently, and this also leads to periodontal trauma. Moreover, your teeth tend to overcompensate so it could lead to fractures and joint disorders in the jaw area.
- When your teeth are extremely crooked
Not everyone will be born with teeth that’s perfectly aligned, and this is where the cosmetic purpose of braces come in. If you have extremely crooked teeth and you want to correct the alignment, then braces could be the answer for you. This also works for those whose teeth are too crowded or are overlapping each other, which could also lead to difficulties in chewing.
- When there are significant spaces in between the teeth
Teeth are supposed to stick together, and having a tiny space in the middle could be forgivable in some cases. However, when the space in between teeth is too noticeable and bothersome, then braces will come to the rescue.
The Benefits You Get From Wearing Braces
Whether coming from a functional or cosmetic need, people wear braces simply because they want to create a change. What’s interesting is that there are actually many benefits that you can get from wearing these braces. First, you get to correct whatever’s wrong with your teeth, and the braces are the ones that will guide your teeth into positions that are most suitable.
With braces on, you get to walk with more self-confidence. This is because with a smile that’s more natural and more complete, your self-esteem increases. Braces are also seen as fashionable in many circles, so this fashion trend is something to look into.
Another benefit to having braces is that the long term health of your teeth and gums will actually have a better prospect. Your teeth are brought back to the purpose they were created for, and since they become aligned all of a sudden, you also get to clean your teeth properly unlike the way you did it before.
Steps to Take Note Of
Once you decided to get orthodontic treatment, you will need to know the various stages of braces. There are many children who begin orthodontic treatment early because the teeth and the jaws are not yet set in stone. For adults, you just need to make sure you’re having your orthodontist examine your teeth, because this is where the treatment will begin.
The orthodontist is the one who creates the customized treatment for the patient, based on how he or she wants to influence the positions of the teeth. The orthodontist then comes up with a game plan that will help achieve the goal as soon as possible, measuring the braces and being the one to actually place it in your teeth. The orthodontist will then meet with the patient regularly after that – like once a month, simply to adjust or tighten the fit of the braces and make sure that everything’s in the right place.
In many cases, the case-to-case basis of each individual and partner requires special elements that make it more than just getting braces on. For abnormal bites for instance, the orthodontist may give you additional rubber bands that you have to ensure stay in your teeth to make the treatment more effective. Maintaining you teeth with your new set of braces is now your prime responsibility
When Is It Okay to Remove Braces?
Depending on how problematic your teeth can be, the period of the orthodontic treatment could vary from one person to another. It’s therefore difficult to say when braces removal will be, because there are a lot of factors that can affect growth. Removing braces should of course be done only by the orthodontist, because whatever happens, the braces will have a permanent effect on your teeth. It’s also not possible to just stick your hand in there and try to pry the braces out.
Basically, when the braces have served their purpose with your teeth, this is the time when it can be removed. But you need to make sure the braces are removed properly by a licensed orthodontist.
What to Expect?
Having braces is not all a walk in the park. Sometimes getting braces means you need to deal with the soreness that’s inevitable with braces. Since the braces take a lot of getting used to, at first you may not be able to chew properly or even talk properly. If you’re getting your braces for the first time, make sure your expectations are properly set and you don’t expect things to be light and easy.

What if you want braces can you get them then really soon if you really want them?
Hi Jacob,
Thank you for your question. The first step to getting braces is getting a consultation appointment with an orthodontic. On this appointment, the orthodontist will examine your teeth and conclude which treatment options will be effective for your specific case. Once you and your orthodontist decide you need braces you can have them almost immediately. Standard braces can be installed in one session. So it is just a matter of time it will take to wait for your appointment. If you decide to go with Invisalign you will need to wait few weeks for the mold to be ready.
